Pinterest’s inspiration pictures will now better represent their diverse user base through the platform’s new size-inclusive AI feature.

The latest preference setting allows users to decide the types of body shapes they want to see in their feeds when searching for fashion or related content inspiration.

According to Pinterest, the introduction of “body type ranges” is a step in creating AI-powered technology that adds value without being addictive. Utilizing its innovative “body type technology,” Pinterest identifies the shapes, sizes, and forms of bodies in billions of photos on the platform to classify common body types among models and subjects, expanding on previous additions like skin tone ranges and hair pattern search.

“Pinterest serves as a visual discovery platform, aiming for users to see themselves mirrored in their search results. Hence, we are integrating AI to enhance inclusivity in our product design,” stated Sabrina Ellis, Pinterest’s chief product officer. She added, “Body type ranges enhance representation on the platform, offering Pinterest users more deliberate choice and control over their Pinterest experience.”

This feature was initially announced alongside the platform’s body type technology last year. It was developed in collaboration with the National Association to Advance Fat Acceptance (NAAFA), body positivity advocates like model Tess Holliday, and Pinterest creators Natalie Craig, Kellie Brown, and Stefany Brito.

The broader feature launch coincides with size-inclusive brand highlights on Pinterest’s search landing page, aligning with the platform’s move towards on-site commerce. Featured brands will include Eloquii, Mara Hoffman, Osei Duro, and Gia / Irl.

Currently, body type ranges are accessible for searches related to women’s fashion and wedding content in the United States, with plans to introduce body type ranges for men’s fashion later this year.

How to enable and save body type ranges

  1. Launch the Pinterest app.

  2. Tap on the search icon.

  4. Click on “body types” at the top of the search results.
