As the year 2023 ended, social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok were filled with lists of what’s in and what’s out for 2024. I personally enjoyed this trend. For me, these lists are not about strict resolutions or unattainable goals. They are about welcoming positive energy and letting go of things that no longer serve you. Being a lover of lists, I decided to join in on the trend and jot down my own “ins” and “outs,” with most of them revolving around wellness.

As a registered dietitian, health and wellness are a natural part of my life. Reflecting on my overall health in 2023, I realized there were habits I wanted to enhance, new ones I wanted to adopt, and some I just wanted to explore for fun. While I believe you can work on your health goals anytime, here are my wellness “ins” for 2024.
1. Dry brushing
After hearing about the benefits of dry brushing, I decided to give it a try. Dry brushing offers exfoliation and lymphatic drainage, making it a relaxing pre-shower routine that can help with dry skin and detoxifying the body. Incorporating this practice into my evening routine has made me feel like I’m having a spa day.

2. Eating high-protein breakfasts
In 2023, the importance of consuming more protein gained attention, from building muscle to hormone balance. As a nutritionist, I focus on adding to meals rather than taking away. Starting my mornings with a high-protein breakfast containing 20-30 grams of protein leaves me feeling satisfied, focused, and energized throughout the day. High-protein breakfasts are a permanent fixture on my “ins” list.
3. Using the “Do Not Disturb” function on my phone
For better mental health, setting my phone to “do not disturb” was a priority for me. In 2024, I’m emphasizing that I don’t need to be reachable at all times. By silencing my phone notifications, I’m making a conscious effort to focus on meaningful offline activities like quality time with friends, self-care, and new experiences.
4. Using a silk pillowcase
Although using a silk pillowcase may not be groundbreaking, I’m dedicated to improving my hair health this year. Since using a silk pillowcase, I’ve noticed a significant reduction in bedhead in the mornings. Additionally, it helps prevent my skin from losing moisture by not absorbing skincare products overnight.

5. Reading in place of mindless scrolling
Including reading in my “ins” list serves as a reminder to choose a book over mindlessly scrolling on my phone. Reading offers various health benefits such as improved critical thinking, stress reduction, and better sleep quality.
6. Drinking electrolytes
While staying hydrated is essential, I realized the importance of electrolytes in maintaining proper body functions. Electrolytes are crucial minerals for hydration, nerve and muscle function, and pH balance. In 2024, I aim to incorporate more electrolyte sources like coconut water, electrolyte tablets, or kombucha.

7. Incorporating strength-based workouts
In 2023, there were many fitness trends, but for 2024, I’m focusing on incorporating strength-based exercises like weight lifting into my routine. Strength training has benefits like enhancing confidence, toning muscles, and reducing the risk of injuries. I plan to combine weight training with my favorite exercises like Pilates and yoga for long-term health.
