When I step into Trader Joe’s, I tend to stick to my usual favorites and seldom venture out to try something new, especially in the dessert section. Being a picky eater, the idea of trying something unfamiliar doesn’t come naturally to me. What if I don’t like it? I could just stick to my mini frozen bananas and gluten-free cookies for life. However, I recently challenged myself to explore new dessert options, and let me tell you: It has been a game-changer.

I’ve come across delightful new treats like chocolate-covered pretzels, Scandinavian Swimmers, and, of course, the mochi! Everyone deserves a sweet indulgence, especially after a taxing week of work and Zoom meetings. Although it may be somewhat controversial, I took it upon myself to sample 17 different desserts from Trader Joe’s. Here is how they stack up:

17. Speculoos Cookie Butter

While some people adore this product, it doesn’t quite hit the mark for me. I prefer Nutella as it feels less overwhelmingly sweet. Though it has a hint of gingerbread cookie flavor, I don’t find it suitable as a spread.

16. Apple Cider Donuts

With many other tempting fall treats on the list, these donuts rank lower for me. I lean towards glazed donuts, and these sugary apple cider donuts don’t quite match my preference. However, if you have a sweet tooth in the morning, these could be a delightful choice.

15. Vanilla Cake Mix

When the craving for cake hits, this vanilla cake mix is a fantastic option. Getting the right balance of moisture and sweetness in a cake can be tricky, but this mix nails it. Pair it with your favorite frosting and sprinkles for a delightful treat.

14. Chocolate Lava Cakes

If you’ve ever yearned for a homemade chocolate lava cake without the hassle of crafting the perfect recipe, look no further. While they may not match up to the real deal in my opinion, these cakes are easy to make in a pinch. Just heat them in the oven, and chocolate lovers will delight in the gooey chocolate center.

13. Half Moon Cookies

Growing up in a Jewish household, I’ve acquired a taste for black and white cookies. While these mini black and white cookies from Trader Joe’s may not rival freshly made ones from a deli, they hold their own in the store-bought category.

12. Dozen Macarons Variés

You don’t have to search far and wide for excellent macarons. This box offers six different flavors of frozen macarons that are flavorful and worth the purchase. While I enjoy the variety, I wish there were classic chocolate and vanilla options in the mix.

11. Scandinavian Swimmers

I’ve often spotted these treats near the register but only recently gave them a try after a roommate praised them. If you’re a fan of Swedish Fish, this alternative is worth a taste. They even offer a sour version for those who enjoy tangy candies.

10. Pumpkin Flavored Joe-Joe’s

No dessert list from Trader Joe’s is complete without their signature cookies. The pumpkin-flavored Joe-Joe’s are a fall favorite with a delightful pumpkin-creme filling that rivals regular Oreo cookies. They hold a mid-tier spot on our list as they are not available year-round, which is a downside.

9. Dark Chocolate Covered Raisins

While raisins alone may lack excitement, add chocolate to the mix, and you have a winner. These make for a quick sweet snack in the afternoon when you want something sweet but not overwhelmingly sugary.

8. Pancake Bread

Trader Joe’s blends the flavors of pancakes and coffee cake into a delectable bread that hits the sweet spot. It’s on the sweeter side, so indulging in moderation is key. If you enjoy coffee cake, this treat is a must-try, despite its slightly higher sweetness level.

7. Milk Chocolate Covered Mini Pretzels

My go-to late-night snack for work sessions, these milk chocolate-covered mini pretzels are a fantastic sweet treat that curbs my sugar cravings. Their mini size helps avoid that guilty feeling when you reach for more than one.

6. Hold the Cone! Mini Ice Cream Cones

A household favorite, these mini ice-cream cones in my fridge disappear quickly. Their charming appearance and heavenly taste make them a hit. Encased in a chocolate coating, these cones unveil a luscious vanilla ice cream center that’s simply delightful.

5. Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter Cups

Why settle for Reese’s when you have this dark chocolate alternative? These peanut butter cups, enveloped in dark chocolate and filled with peanut butter, reach new heights when chilled. They make for an excellent on-the-go dessert option that’s both convenient and tasty.

4. Vegan Banana Bread with Walnuts

In one word: delightful. This pre-made treat is among the top desserts at Trader Joe’s. With a perfect blend of sweetness and a soft texture, this banana bread with walnuts is a mouthwatering delight. The nuts perfectly complement the banana bread’s sweet flavor, creating a truly satisfying treat.

3. Mochi

If you’re unsure about mochi, like I was, let me enlighten you: it’s rice dough with a delectable ice cream filling, typically vanilla. Despite not being a huge ice cream enthusiast, I found Trader Joe’s mochi incredibly flavorful and worth a try. With a variety of flavors, including the widely loved Ube, these desserts offer something for everyone. My personal favorite is the strawberry flavor, an absolute delight.

2. Gluten-Free Chocolate Chip Cookies

Though I don’t follow a gluten-free diet, these chocolate chip cookies are a standout item at Trader Joe’s. The crunchy cookies with just the right amount of chocolate chips offer a delightful treat without overwhelming the taste buds. In my opinion, they outshine even the original Tate’s cookies in flavor and texture.

1. Mini Frozen Bananas

Warning: highly addictive. Undoubtedly, this is the crown jewel of Trader Joe’s desserts—I’m completely hooked. Coated with the perfect amount of dark chocolate, these frozen bananas are irresistibly good. Once you try one, you won’t be able to stop because they are just that delicious.
